John Ternus Becomes Apple CEO, Replacing Tim Cook in Major Leadership Shift
Apple's new chief executive takes the helm during a period of AI-driven hardware challenges and significant executive turnover.

John Ternus has officially assumed the role of CEO at Apple, marking the first leadership change at the company since Steve Jobs' departure in 2011. Tim Cook, who led the company for over a decade, is transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board. In a farewell letter to employees, Cook emphasized the company's culture, stating, "This place is proof that culture triumphs over everything. We share a belief that what we build matters, and that we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to leave the world better than we found it."
Ternus, previously the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, inherits a complex landscape. Apple is currently navigating the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, which has contributed to global shortages of RAM and other critical components. Additionally, the company faces an increasingly complicated political and economic environment. This transition also coincides with significant changes in the senior leadership team, including the departure of long-time executive Phil Schiller, who will step down from his role leading the App Store and Apple Store, though he will remain as an Apple Fellow.
The new leadership structure sees Katherine Adams' position of SVP of government affairs vacated, with responsibilities shared between Jennifer Newstead and Tim Cook. Luca Maestri, the former CFO, is no longer listed on the senior leadership team after transitioning to a VP role in 2024. The first major test for Ternus will come on September 9th, when Apple holds its first hardware event under his leadership, where new iPhones, potentially including a foldable "Ultra" model, are expected to be unveiled.
