Anthropic's $2T IPO Ambition: AI's Biggest Test Yet

Investors expect the Claude maker to float at a $2 trillion valuation in October, which would be the largest IPO ever and a critical stress test for the AI boom.

Anthropic is reportedly planning to go public in October at a valuation of $2 trillion or more, a figure that would eclipse SpaceX's recent IPO and make the AI lab's debut the largest in history. According to a Financial Times report, half a dozen of the company's backers expect the five-year-old startup to more than double its current valuation, driven by what they describe as explosive revenue growth.

Investors are betting on Anthropic's annualized revenue reaching between $100 billion and $120 billion by end of 2026—up more than 10 times over the course of the year. One investor told the FT that at 800% annual growth, even a conservative 30 times revenue multiple would imply a $3 trillion valuation. For context, AI-adjacent public companies like Palantir and Nebius currently trade at roughly 55 times revenue.

The bullish outlook is not without risks. The company faces rising competition from Chinese rivals, pressure for AI regulation, and a bitter feud with the US government. In June, the Commerce Department temporarily banned Anthropic's best models (Fable 5 and Mythos 5) under export controls, contributing to a slowdown in revenue growth that month. The company has since rebounded, but the incident unsettled some customers.

Anthropic's market-leading model costs more than 2.5 times as much to use as OpenAI's flagship, while Chinese open-weight alternatives are dramatically cheaper. Data from Ramp shows that while Anthropic gained market share among US businesses in July, many companies are "hitting their limit on AI spend" and switching to less expensive, less powerful models.

Despite these headwinds, investors remain confident. One backer who has also invested in OpenAI and SpaceX said, "It's easy to come up with challenges, but the company continues to be in first position in performance, positioning, and what people want exposure to."

What to Watch

  • Pricing and demand: Will enterprise customers tolerate the premium pricing, or will cost pressures push them to cheaper alternatives?
  • Regulatory overhang: The Commerce Department's export controls and the DoD's supply-chain risk label could disrupt operations.
  • Market reception: A $2 trillion IPO comes at a time when public markets are growing cautious about AI valuations. If the float disappoints, it could ripple across the sector.

Anthropic declined to comment, and the company is in a quiet period following its SEC filing in June.
