Anthropic bets $45B on Nscale in latest compute-gobbling deal
The AI lab signs a six-year, $45 billion agreement with British infrastructure startup Nscale for Nvidia Vera Rubin-based compute, continuing its aggressive expansion.

Anthropic has signed a deal to rent roughly $45 billion in AI compute from Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company founded only in 2024, according to a source familiar with the deal. The six-year agreement will see Nscale supply Anthropic with compute powered by Nvidia's Vera Rubin system, its next-generation chip architecture, with capacity expected to come online in late 2027 from Nscale's flagship data center in West Virginia.
The deal is the latest in a rapid series of compute commitments for Anthropic as it races to secure the massive resources needed to train and deploy advanced AI models. Earlier this month, the company signed a $10 billion, six-year agreement with AI cloud startup Volta for cloud compute from a data center in Norway. In July, it inked a $5 billion compute deal with AMD. May brought a reported $1.25 billion-per-month capacity deal with SpaceX's data centers, and in April, Anthropic expanded its partnerships with Amazon, Google, and Broadcom, adding gigawatts of additional power.
This aggressive compute procurement is not unique to Anthropic — Google, OpenAI, and Meta are all on similar acquisition sprees. But the Nscale deal stands out for its sheer size and the involvement of a young company. Nscale, founded in 2023, has already landed deals with Microsoft and is positioning itself as a major player in the AI infrastructure space, leveraging Nvidia's latest hardware to attract deep-pocketed AI labs.
The Vera Rubin system, which combines six chips working in concert, represents the cutting edge of chip design and is expected to deliver significant performance gains over current offerings. For Anthropic, securing capacity on this hardware ahead of the curve is a strategic move to ensure it has the computational firepower needed to keep pace with rivals in the increasingly competitive AI landscape.
While the financial commitment is enormous, it underscores a fundamental reality in AI: compute is the new oil, and the labs that secure the most of it — and the most advanced flavors of it — are best positioned to lead in the next wave of model development. Anthropic's spree suggests it is determined not to be left behind.
