Meta's Glimmer model brings 'personal superintelligence' to your laptop
With the open-weight Muse Glimmer, Meta offers a local, privacy-conscious AI agent for consumer hardware—and a glimpse of where it draws the line between open and closed AI.

Meta on Monday released Muse Glimmer, an open-weight AI model designed to run AI agents locally on consumer hardware, giving the clearest signal yet of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's "personal superintelligence" vision. The 30-billion-parameter model, available under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, is essentially an open version of Meta's more powerful but closed Muse Spark, which debuted in April.
Glimmer is built for agents that can handle multi-step tasks—calling tools, writing and debugging code, working with files and screenshots, and executing extended workflows—all on a Mac or PC with a single consumer GPU. It supports text and images and was trained across more than 100 languages.
Meta envisions Glimmer powering tasks like managing schedules, drafting messages, and organizing files—jobs that demand deep access to personal data. By processing that data on-device rather than in the cloud, Meta is laying groundwork for privacy-sensitive personal agents. Glimmer is also designed to be "always-on," working anywhere, anytime, even without an internet connection.
That vision echoes what Zuckerberg has argued for years: advanced AI should empower individuals, not stay locked in the hands of a few companies. In a new letter, he framed distributing superintelligence as a path to "personal empowerment," where agents work 24/7 to improve relationships, health, career, and more—and where "everyone will have free or affordable access to these tools."
But access isn't ownership. Zuckerberg's promise comes as Meta increasingly distinguishes between models it releases openly and those it keeps under its control. Muse Spark remains closed-weight, while Glimmer can be downloaded, fine-tuned, and run on your own hardware. Glimmer, then, offers an early map of where Meta draws that line: the AI it lets you own, versus the more capable intelligence it keeps for itself.
