Global Memory Shortage Finally Hits the MacBook Air
Apple's most popular laptop is now facing supply constraints as AI companies soak up memory chips, leading to shipping delays and a shift in marketing focus.

The global memory chip shortage, driven largely by the insatiable demands of AI companies, has now reached Apple's most popular computer: the MacBook Air. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the shortage has already constrained supply of the Mac mini and Mac Studio, but retailers are now reporting that the MacBook Air is facing its tightest availability yet.
Customers on Apple's website are seeing shipping estimates pushed into the back half of August, and some configurations won't arrive until September. The company is reportedly working to mitigate the issue by raising prices and sourcing memory from Chinese suppliers. Additionally, Apple delayed its back-to-school promotion this year, and its marketing has notably shifted to spotlight the base model MacBook Pro, with a warning that the MacBook Air is "subject to availability."
For developers and power users, the MacBook Air has long been the default recommendation for a portable, efficient machine. The delay signals that even Apple's supply chain muscle isn't immune to the memory crunch. It also underscores a broader trend: as AI companies buy up every available DRAM and NAND chip, consumer hardware—even from the world's most valuable company—will feel the pinch.
For now, anyone in the market for a MacBook Air should either order early or consider the MacBook Pro if they need a machine sooner. The shortage also serves as a reminder that the AI boom has real-world consequences for everyday tech buyers, and prices are likely to stay elevated until supply catches up.
