Anthropic's $1.5B Copyright Settlement Gets Final Approval, Setting Record for Book Recovery
A federal judge signs off on the largest known copyright recovery in history, with authors receiving $3,000 per pirated book.

A federal judge has granted final approval to Anthropic's $1.5 billion class action settlement with authors who accused the company of training its AI models on copyrighted books without permission. The order, issued by Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín, closes a significant chapter in the ongoing battle between AI companies and content creators.
The settlement, which the plaintiffs' law firm calls the "largest known copyright recovery in history," provides approximately $3,000 per book to authors whose works were allegedly used in Anthropic's training data. The class action was first filed in 2024 by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson. While a previous ruling by now-retired Judge William Alsup granted Anthropic a partial victory, he also allowed the class action to proceed, comparing the company's data harvesting to "Napster-style downloading of millions of works."
Anthropic agreed to the settlement in September 2025, and over 91% of eligible authors and publishers have already claimed their share. "We're looking forward to bringing this matter to a close," said Anthropic's general counsel Aparna Sridhar.
However, not all are satisfied. Anthropic still faces copyright lawsuits from Chicken Soup for the Soul and other authors who argue the $3,000 per book is insufficient compensation. These holdouts signal that the broader question of fair compensation for training data remains unresolved.
